Dear America

Zara just launched in America and, in way of introduction, posted this great series of 50 photos, one for each state, titled Dear America.
I had never heard of Zara previously, and I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the garments after poking my nose around their online store, but this did put them on my radar.
I’ve learned to appreciate America in the past few years much more than I did in my entire youth. I was disenchanted with America for some reason, when it turns out I really knew very little about it.
Over the past year or so I’ve read most of Whitman and Emerson, and am now reading Howard Zinn’s excellent “A People’s History of The United States.” To top it off, the past two years have been the first two years I’ve made permanent settlement outside the great state of Texas. Both the reading and the living have been eye-opening, and I’ve grown endeared to the states.
Do we have our ugly politics and ugly history? Yes. But what country doesn’t? To let the ugliness obscure our vision of all the beautiful details in this country would be a shame.
I encourage you to pour some coffee or scoop some ice cream, put on some Joseph Arthur, open up the Dear America piece and nudge your mouse slightly to the left so that the pictures scroll by nice and slow.
Hat tip to Nadia Payan for sharing Dear America on Facebook. Hap tip to Zara for putting it together.
